OH NO...:
By: ShadowWing
Ever wonder why Nightwing goes "Oh no." whenever ShadowWing is in the area? Well here's the answer set in the time when ShadowWing went by the name of Nightingale, Nightwing was still Robin and the Titan's Tower was still in one piece.
Standard Disclaimer: The Titan's belong to D.C. Nightingale/Belle Anderson/ShadowWing belongs to me, I ain't making money, so don't sue me.
Author's Note: I like Kory, really I do. But this was toooo easy.
It was a typical day in New York, typical if your day included dressing up in colorful costumes and busting a few heads in dark alleys. Which is what Robin, Starfire, Wonder Girl, Changling, Raven, Speedy, and Cyborg were doing. A call over the police band alerted them to a Gang war, and being the heroes that they are decided to lend New York's finest a hand. It was a messy affair, but nothing that the Teen Titans couldn't handle..
Starfire was holding her own, with about five gang members going after her at once. *This is difficult* she thought *I must remember to control my temper, and not kill anybody.* A gang member then grabbed her from behind and was a bit too friendly with his hands. *Though, it does not mean I can't HURT some of them* With a few well placed starbolts the five young men were either out cold, or running to the nearest police officer begging to be taken in.
With that taken care of Starfire then went to the aid of her teammates, overall it looked like thinks were well in hand. Changling had morphed into a elephant and was juggling two guys with his trunk, Wonder Girl was using her lasso to hang a few up like Christmas ornaments, Cyborg was holding another at arms length, the thug was swinging like mad, Vic looked bored. As she turned she spotted Speedy using three for target practice, he threw her a grin and fired another arrow, without looking to aim, it missed the guy's head by an inch. Raven was assisting the medical teams to treat the injured. She finally spotted Robin, two thugs were keeping him busy, but nothing the Boy Wonder couldn't handle.
But another one came out from behind a dumpster and was about to strike Robin from behind, since he was busy with the two in front of him he didn't notice. Before Starfire could shout a warning or fire a starbolt a voice rang out.
"Hey Robin! WATCH YOUR BACK!"
He pivoted out of way just before a two by four swung down on where his head was. Before the guy could register that his target had moved, a slim girl in a form-fitting purple and gray costume landed on his back. She then back-flipped off of the now immobile creep, and landed on another one knocking him out. By then Robin had finished with the last few and turned to thank the newcomer for the warning, his jaw dropped.
"Nightingale!! What are you doing here?!"
"Saving your hide. What else?"
By then the others and come over to also meet the young woman, all were shocked to find that their leader knew her. Vic was the first to speak the question that was on everybody's mind,
"You know her Robbie?"
Robin then turned to the others replying, "Yes I do, team I'd like you to meet Nightingale, she's an old friend. We met in Gotham, and she's been trained by Batman, just like me."
"Nightingale and Robin?" Speedy chuckled, "The Batman have a thing for birds?"
Nightingale looked coolly at him and replied "Nightingale may not be the best name for a costumed hero, but it is better than some I've heard. Speedy isn't?" The implications of the statement were clear. The rest of the Titans chuckled, and introduced themselves while Speedy remained speechless.
Gar, who was now a monkey perched on Vic's head, stated "Oooo, she's gotten Speedy to be quiet for over five minutes. Can we keep her Robin? Please!"
"Yeah, Robbie," Vic chimed in, "Please, maybe she'll get him to shut up next." Gar gave him a raspberry.
"Oh," replied Nightingale "if you wanted him to be quiet all you had to do was ask." within a minute Gar went from chattering monkey to mute monkey.
When Gar realized that he was not making any noise he turned back into human form, and was still unable to talk. The mouth was moving, but no sound was coming out. He finally stopped trying and glared at Nightingale, who was trying to look innocent.
"Um...did I forget to mention that Nightingale has mental abilities?" stated a sheepish Robin. Gar gave him a look that clearly stated "Yes you did forget to mention that!"
"You can mentally 'turn off' his voice?" Raven softly asked.
"Yes," replied Nightingale "I have a full range of telepathic and telekinetic abilities."
"Can you make it permanent?" asked Speedy with a grin "We would be very grateful if you could." Gar looked worried.
Nightingale laughed and replied "Sorry, I can't. I have a time limit on my powers. I can only use them for a certain length of time, then I have to rest before using them again."
"Darn," muttered Speedy
Wonder Girl had pulled Robin aside and was talking to him quietly "You know Dick, someone with her abilities would be a great help to the Titans."
"I don't know Donna. She was a bit of a loose cannon when she worked with Batman and I in Gotham."
"Hey, people and times change. Anyway let's give her a chance, she seems to be hitting it off with everyone." Wonder Girl motioned to the group who was chatting with Nightingale, she had finally shown pity on Gar and given him his voice back. The only Titan not involved with the conversation was Starfire, who looking at Nightingale, uneasily. "Well" muttered Wonder Girl "almost everyone."
After a bit of prodding, and begging on the parts of Gar and Roy, Nightingale accepted the invitation to come to the Tower. While showing her around their base Robin took each of the Titans aside and asked them about letting her join. Each one was more than happy about the idea. When Robin asked Starfire about it she seemed uneasy.
"I don't know."
Robin was concerned "What's wrong?"
"How long did you say you knew her?" she looked at him suspiciously
He had to hide a grin, you didn't call yourself a detective if you couldn't read body language. Kory seemed a bit jealous, after all Nightingale was a girl from his past she knew nothing about. A very attractive one at that. "A few years, like I said we met in Gotham and treated each other like brother and sister." *That should put her at ease.*
"Well.." she started, "O.K."
Later they presented the invitation to join to Nightingale, who looked surprised. "Um.. you should know, I'm not much of a team player."
"You'll get used to it." snickered Vic.
"And if I don't accept?" she asked.
"Simple." stated Speedy "We will find out where you live and hound you until you join." Gar punctuated the idea by turning into a dog and howling.
"Well," she muttered "when you put it that way, how can I refuse."
Several Weeks Pass.......
Nightingale quickly got settled into the Tower, and overall live was good. She and Robin had gone out a few times to catch up on news, and the other Titans seemed to accept her. Except Starfire.
She had tried to make friends with the alien woman, but was not having any luck so Nightingale just accepted the fact that it would take time. *Funny,* she thought, *I can read minds, and put other people at ease with just a thought, but one alien mind throws me for a loop.*
"Is everything all right?"
Nightingale about jumped out of her skin, "Raven! Sorry you startled me."
"You seem upset.." Raven sounded concerned
"Just Starfire," began Nightingale "I can deal with the fact that she doesn't like me. But she's pushing it, if she shoves too far..."
Raven sighed "You both have strong tempers, I also hope this resolves soon."
Both were referring to an earlier training session were one of Starfire's bolts "accidentally" knocked a large panel over toward Nightingale. If it wasn't for her telekinetic shields and reflexes, she could have been hurt. The rest considered it an accident, but to Raven and Nightingale, who saw more than the others, knew better.
"I do not believe Kory wanted to harm you."
"I know that Raven," replied Nightingale "Her temper gets the better of her at times."
"Well, I must go into the city for some shopping, maybe you should get out for a while, and give Starfire time to cool off."
Nightingale laughed, "Wish I could, but I promised Vic I would cover monitor duty for him while he visited Sarah at Star Labs."
"Then I shall see you when I return"
When Nightingale got to the main area of the Tower she was not happy with what she saw. Starfire, and she did not look happy.
*Better make the most of it* "Hello Kory." she stated cheerfully and tried to walk past her to the monitor room.
Kory blocked her way. "We need to talk."
All of Nightingale's instincts were now on red alert, forcing herself to remain calm she replied "What about."
"You and Dick."
"What about us?" *I think*thought Nightingale, *I just figured out what's been bugging her.*
"Where did you go yesterday?" Starfire was almost growling.
"Out to lunch to catch up on old news." Nightingale scanned the Tower for anybody else, no such luck. She was alone, with a six-foot pissed off alien, who could shoot off very powerful rays. *Oh Boy.*
"Nothing else?"
"Nope, afterwards he said he had things to do, so did I so we split up and came here later."
"You came back together!" Kory's hands were starting to glow.
"Nothing happened! Kory will you calm do..."
Nightingale's sentence was cut off by a scream of "LIAR!!" and a starbolt throwing her across the room, over the meeting table and on the floor. Nightingale was thanking God that she put up her shields when Kory's hands started to glow. Now she was mad. *Everybody had better forgive me for what I'm gonna do. But she ASKED for THIS!*
Kory's jaw hit the floor when Nightingale telekineticly lifted herself off of the floor and hovered in the air. "O.K." she snarled "One: there is absolutely nothing going on between Dick and I. And two: you have been pushing your luck for a bit now, so I'm gonna give you a taste of my temper."
Kory was a bit nervous, but believed she could handle anything Nightingale could dish out. "Whenever you're ready witch!"
Nightingale's eyes began to glow, "Just remember Starfire, you asked for this..."
Several Hours Later.....
Nightingale picked herself off the floor, and looked around. "Oh my, we did trash place." As she stood up she noticed that Kory was still out cold in the middle of the table, which was cracked into about three pieces. The rest of the room was not in better shape. The walls were cracked, computer screens and other parts were scrap. Looking at the mess, she came to a decision. She heard the others coming into the Tower and decided to talk to them before they came into the room.
Everyone was shocked when Nightingale came into the room with her uniform singed and in shreds. She quickly started talking, "Before you start asking, I going to make an announcement. I decided to quit the Titans, I'll be happy to help you from time to time as needed but I don't think that a permanent membership is for me. The reason for this decision is in there. You can ask her about it when she wakes up."
Everybody stampeded to the door and froze at the sight. As she was going out the main door she stated "By the way Dick knows where to send the bill!"
No sooner than Nightingale had left then Kory began to wake up.....growling. All the Titans, except Dick, ran for it. He swallowed, having a pretty good idea what started this mess.
"Oh no."
